Studio Aubergine's design was born out of a recognition of the changing societal attitudes towards napping. Once stigmatized, napping is now being embraced for its health and productivity benefits. The design team, familiar with the rigors of all-nighters, saw a need for a convenient and comfortable napping solution.
The Aubergine Pillow stands out for its unique properties. It inflates generously with just a single puff, yet is compact enough to be carried around for everyday use. The pillow's unique design and functionality are achieved through the combination of 100% cotton with TPU, a material that allows for heat sealing to ensure an airtight pillow.
When fully inflated, the Aubergine Pillow measures 383 mm in width, 140 mm in depth, and 725 mm in height. When packed, it compacts to a height of 200 mm and a radius of 32.5 mm. The pillow is designed to inflate effortlessly, using the Bernoulli Effect to draw in surrounding air for greater efficiency.
The Aubergine Pillow was successfully funded on Kickstarter in December 2016, reaching 450% of its original funding goals. It was designed in Singapore and manufactured in China, and has been featured on DesignTaxi, Core77, AsiaOne, and various other media outlets. It has also been exhibited at Singapore Design Week Future/Now 2017 and NUS DID Show 2017.
Despite the crowded travel pillow market, the Aubergine Pillow stands out for its unique combination of convenience and comfort. It addresses the common issues associated with inflatable pillows, such as slow inflation, dirty mouth valves, and squeaky noises. The design team overcame these challenges by introducing a dimple for a more comfortable rest and exploring different methods of inflation and napping postures.
The Aubergine Pillow was awarded Silver in A' Fashion and Travel Accessories Design Award in 2018, a testament to its innovative design and functionality. This inflatable pillow, which "plumps up generously in just one puff, yet compacts small," truly offers comfort on demand, revolutionizing the concept of napping.
